Get More From Vodafone International Credit

I've been a Vodafone international SIM card customer for more than a year but I did not know that I can get more from the service, perhaps because I do not read every small prints and adverts word for word. Or perhaps already contented with the tariff's offer of 60 minutes free international calls for every £10 top up.  This is the selling point why I have choosen Vodafone as Philippines is included in their free international allowance. It does not matter ifyou are calling mobile or land line. Other similar service from different networks no longer service Philippines with free allowance.

What do you get?

• Freebee rewards.

Everytime you top up, you will get  freebee pointz. These points can be exchanged with freebee rewardz staright away or can be saved to accumulate enough pointz towards a bigger reward like a  new smartphone or TV.

• Free international calls.

The 60  minutes free international calls can be used to the following countries. This list may change in the future but it is true at the time of this post.

The free minutes depends on how much you top up. The least minute is 60 for £10, 100 for £15 and 240 for £30. The catch is, you need to finish your minutes within a month otherwise it will expire.

• You keep your balance.

If you only use your international minutes without placing local calls or texting, your balance will remain intact. This can be used to buy other services like extra minutes to use it locally, extra texts or data, and another international call bundles to destinations above. Dial 34443 to choose which extra to get.

• Interesting extra bits.

Vodafone IOU

In situations like you are running low on credits, a service called IOU can let you borrow £3 top up. It needs activation and has a charge but it can be an emergency life saver in tight situations. Text IOU to 468 to opt in. Terms.

Buzzback

In case you do not like to owe anything when you are out of credit, you can let your friend to call you by sending a free text telling them to call you by sending your friend's number to 30303. Conditions.

Vodafone family

This is even more a budget saver. This features free calls to a party of 3 vodafone users with only one person paying. Each can make a call for free for 60minutes at one time. The trick not to pay extra is  to end the call before 60 minutes and dial again. Read terms and conditions.

Auto Dial: On An Android

Phone cards are popular in making cheaper international calls, however, the need to dial an access number, long PIN and the destination number is somewhat making it too fiddly to use. Others prefer international sim cards because it can be directly dialed in one touch.

Luckily, there is a way to automate all the dialing if you have a smart phone. If you are using an android phone, you can use the dialer to save a number's contact, with the phonecard's access number and PIN included. This will automate the 3 sequences into one continuous task. When it is set up, all you need to do is to tap it, and the smart phone will dial the access number, enter the PIN number and the destination number in one tap!

How To Program It

For example, if you are using just dial phonecard service, here's how to do it. Whilst on the phone's dialer

1. key in the access number

2. add a 2 second pause by pressing the star button until the "," symbol shows up

3. key in the PIN number

4. a. add a 2 second pause by pressing the star button(1) until the "," symbol shows up

    b. or you can add "wait" (this will prompt you to press a button to dial the programmed destination number) by pressing the left soft key (key with light at the left of the home button) until the dialer menu shows up

    then press W(:) Add Wait(2)

5. key in the phone number complete with international and area codes

6. save and name the contact number

How To Use It

Just tap the contact with the programmed number and it will dial the access number, wait for 2 seconds before it dial's the PIN then wait again for 2 seconds before it dial's the destination number.

If you use Add Wait(;), you need to press Yes (3) before your phone dials the phone number.

Note that when you check the call log, the name of the dialed programmed number will be over ridden by the name of the access number. If you do not save a separate contact name for the access number, the log will just be showing the access number. 

It also works with automated voice operator that tells you which numbers to press to a reach a certain department or services.

Which Pay as You Go Sim?

Pay as you go sims are a good way to budget your calls. Although the air time rate is rather higher, it is perfect for those who do not use voice calls often. And you can top up as rarely as you can, depending on your need. One of my PAYG sim for example, has been topped up more than a year and the sim is still active. This means a good alternative to a monthly subscription for the kids which is just intended mainly for receiving calls and sending a few texts.

All operators in the UK has a PAYG equivalent. What made me choose a particular network depends on my calling needs. Below is the list of my PAYG's and the specific reason why I liked them.

Vodafone
For free international calls, freebie rewards

For international calls, this is my main SIM card. It gives you free international allowance on top of the money you paid. For £10, in my tariff, I have free 60 minutes to call the Philippines and other destinations included in the list below.

The £10 top up can be used to call the UK at 30pence a minute and 14 pence per texts. But I do not use the £10 to call or text but again "recycle" the credit for another international call by texting the word "Bcall" (without the qoutes) to 80550 for a £5 international credit. This credit can be used to any BT line or from a monthly subscription mobile using it's free minutes. The text is chargeable by 14pence so the remaining £4.86, I again send the word "Bcall" to 80041 for a £3 credit. So an additional £8 to call international destinations with cheaper rate using BT Phone or another pay monthly mobile using the included free minutes. See the tool rate below.

Another perk from PAYG vodafone is for every top up, you earn points that can be exchanged. I turn my points into Amazon e vouchers and use it to purchase products at amazon.

Orange

For half price movies, free international calls

If you are a movie fan, this is the PAYG sim for you. Orange offers Orange Wednesdays on Vue cinema that let's you buy a movie ticket for two for the price of one. This is a good offer for 2 adults. If you are a family with two kids, you are better off with the in house cinema family deal offer.

Orange has also an international call freebie if you choose the Camel variant which gives you free 60 minutes international call to these destinations:

Philippines is not included in the list, that's why this SIM is only for the cinema's buy one get one offer for me. Still I can use the topped up money  to buy an international credit using the "Bcall" method.

The cost of calling to a UK number cost 20p per minute, UK texts are 10p and overseas texts are 15p. This is lower than the Vodafone price.

For unlimited text and calls. 

I've been with O2 PAYG two years ago. In fact I still have the SIM card with at least £3 top up on it. The last top up I did was over a year already but the number is still active.  The reason why I have chosen O2 was the free international call bundle, your country tariff, that they have before. But unfortunately, it was abolished and replaced by a different international country pricing. There is no longer free calls but a flat rate cost for a destination country, like if I want to call the Philippines or place a text to a mobile or landline, would cost me 10pence a minute or per message.

O2 rewards is still available with every top ups and applied as a 10% off on the money you spend. Your £10 top up to O2 unlimited tariff can be eligible to unlimited O2 to O2 texts, £15 can give unlimited O2 to O2 calls.

Cost of calls are 25pence for landline and mobiles, 15pence per text.

Lebara Mobile

For low top up, low international calls on other destinations, free calls, unlimited data

This is one of the specialist international sim providers. The cost of calls to the Philippines is pegged at 14pence per minute. Taking this into consideration on my case is not really a good deal for me. I have been with them about 4 years ago when the international bundles from the UK sim card providers were not yet available.

Ongoing promotion for this SIM provider are free lebara to lebara calls, low top up of £5, and extra credit if you pay at least £20 in one go. These promotions should be used in 30 days and can not be extended unless you top up another £5. 

There is also an option of unlimited data, UK data plus, for the internet users. This is an ongoing promotion at the moment and  the price is £12 which is valid for 30 days. This includes 500 UK minutes, unlimited texts and free lebara to lebara calls.

Vectone International Call Scam

I was a fan of Vectone international sim card way back until 2011. In fact it's been my favourite international call provider for years until a negative experience put me into thinking Vectone is a dubious company after all. This all started when I fall into their country saver offer that gives 1500 minutes to call a single sun cellular number in the Philippines for £15 a month. This translate into 1 pence per minute. The first 6 days was ok, but the service encountered a technical problem on the 7th until the 29th day. On the 30th day, the service resumed and I was left with 800 minutes to finish. 

Is this scam?

A fraudulent business scheme is considered a scam. And I think this is what happened. They did not deliver the service I have bought and they did not give me a refund. Instead head ache of everyday chasing them through phone calls( thanks God it's free call). I understand that customer service can not do anything as they do not own the company, but when they told me that they tried to ring me and I wasn't responding made me angry as they never did.

I've got another problem from vectone again.They charged me with £15 for the renewal of my account but the minutes remains zero.i called them a couple of times and they keep telling me to wait for 24 hrs.it's almost two weeks now and they haven't fixed it yet.it's so frustrating!i called again a while ago but I wasn't finish talking to him, he put the phone down.they answer calls for ages and that's what i got!the guy told me that he could not see the payment in their system!how come?it's in my bank statement!This vectone system is giving me headache!their customer service sucks!i emailed them already.i hope they will take action on this matter.

vectone completely scammed me at least 3 times now and i will never part my money with them again after the last time i topped up.. they had taken a total of £9 from me in a matter of 2 hours from topping up when i only made a 37 minute and a 3 minute call and 1 sms text to another vectone user internationally at a usual rate of only 1p per minute as was charged earlier and later on that day. the rate is and always had been only 1p per minute but several occasions they have seemed to charge whatever the hell they like and take masses of my credit! check this vid and spread the word!!! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fS17qoELocg

Do we still make overseas call when we can use voice over internet protocol for free? Those who are always with high speed internet and have VOIP application installed might no longer need it, but people like me, whose contacts are mainly without the convenience of a reliable high speed internet is a must. It is a necessity that even if it costs arms and legs, I still need to do it. Thanks we have phone cards, international call sim card operators and pay as you go international bundles with popular networks.

Problem with phone cards is sometimes the connection and the quality of the calls are not good. The most annoying part is when you get charged the moment you are connected to the routing access number even when the international number you're trying to call is busy, unreachable or the worst, has not made a connection yet. 

International sim card service is also good, straight forward to use, no access number to dial and no pin number to memorize. Just be careful with their deals. I have a bad experience with an operator's country saver deal of 1500 free minutes for a month. I just used about 100 minutes until the interruption of service because of their own technical fault for 27 days. They did not return the unused credits.

VOIP like skype, is for free communication, but only for those who have the required equipments, it is brilliant and cheap. But as the service is internet connection dependent, sometimes it is not practical. 

A better alternative to VOIP, phone cards, and international sim card is Rebtel. It has a VOIP free communication like the Skype, cheap rate like a local phone (5.49pence to call Philippine landline and 6.49pence to call mobile), and the flexibility of a mobile. Rebtel works in assigning a local number in place of the international number of your contact. As it is a local number, the charges is also local. You can dial this generated number of your international contact with any PC's, tablets, land line phones, basic mobile phones, or smart phones.

And if you have a smartphone, ( apple, android or blackberry), you can download their Rebtel application and use Wi-Fi instead of the free minutes. Using Rebtel

I've started using the service with the free 5 minutes. It was a call placed to a Philippine Mobile. Rebtel has converted the Philippine number into a local UK number that starts with 0207. Because I have an unlimited local number from BT, I used my landline to do this. The call was clear and did not interrupt until I finished the 5 free minutes.

The second test was using a mobile. I turned on airplane mode so my mobile network is disabled and used Wi-Fi to connect (Data,Wifi, 3G button). Connection is alright but the first 2 calls did not maintain connection. The third call had no problem until I stopped after 20 minutes.

I used my provider's network on the third test(local phone). The connection is the same as when using Wi-Fi or landline. The quality of call is clear and no interruption.

The only downside that I can think of is the 15% Lux Tax for users who are members of the EURO union. The 15% tax is not reflected on the total calling credit. For example your £7 calling credit is actually charged £8.05.

Calling abroad is not cheap, specially when you use your mobile phone on a normal tariff. Big networks like Vodafone has a specialised tariff that can give you a better rate when you call abroad. In fact it can give you FREE minutes, as long as you top up every month.

This is an extra value for pay as you go customers called Vodafone International Freebee. How much free international minutes you'll get depends on how much you top up every month. A tenner will get you 60 free international minutes and £10 worth of calling credit. This means the first 60 minutes of international calls is free. Your £10 credit will only be used when you call any UK number or when you have finished the 60 free international minutes.  £15 gives you 100 free minutes and £30 has 240.  You have 30 days to use your free minutes.

My thoughts

The first time I've used the service,  my calls to the Philippines was charged at the normal tariff. What I did was to contact them through chat and told them I was in the International Freebee. I was given a number to call. The customer service at the other end was helpful and she reversed back the chargers. She told me that I should have waited for the text confirmation that the international freebee is ready to use.

I can say that the connection when making a call to the Philippines using Vodafone's International Freebee is fast and good. The direct  dialing of contacts without an access and pin number is very convenient. The quality of call is also good. Although there are times that it seems like it can not connect, and the person at the other end can not hear my voice or vice versa. Overall performance is good though. And the best reason to stick to it  is it's free.

Overseas call Tip

AT the time of this post, my patience run out. I can not make a call to the Philippines again. I still have more than 800 minutes to make but I can not use their service. I can say that this service of Vectone is plain rubbish. 

I called their costumer service 6 times and they are not very helpful at all. One CS told me a tutorial to tinker on my phone! OK, did what she "tutored" me. No luck! It seemed like she was telling my phone is the problem. Ha-ha!

Then she told me to wait a moment. I told her the service was out since the 7th of November, resumes on the 23rd, then out again today the 24th of November. That's not only a moment it was weeks, I am giving them to sort out one problem.

My account still has 800 minutes on it and I asked them what will happen. They said once the renewal date is due, I can not roll over the unused minutes. I understand if the fault is mine, but it's their system, so I am sure everyone agrees, that we should not buy this explanation.

My advice is not to take COUNTRY SAVER FROM VECTONE.

At the time of writing, the problem with Vectone is already resolved. They sent me an email confirming the problem is remedied already. They claimed to have called me and my phone was ringing however, I never received any call from them.

Important message.

At the time of writing this post, I have a problem with Vectone's country saver. I could not make a call to the sun cellular destination. The customer service, dial 111, always tell me to wait for 24 hours but until this time I can not make a call. I still have at least 900 minutes left in my account and I feel cheated.

Did you know that you can call the Philippines  for 1 pence a minute? £15 would get you 1500 minutes to call a Philippine mobile. .This deal has been around for a while and have seen it before. The fact that it's quite very cheap, I had a bit of a doubt, on signal strength, on network traffict, and the reliability of the affiliate network back in the Philippines. Here's the details

What do you need?

• To start, you need a vectone sim card, you can get this at

The sim card will be dispatched within 3 days or less, iPhone 4 users and other mobiles that need micro card, need to specify and tick the iphone button, otherwise just choose the standard sim card. You can order up to 2 simcards at a time and if you need more than 2, you can get back to the site and order more.

• Your contact in the Philippines will also need a sim card from Sun Cellular network

Why Sun Cellular? That's the affilliate network of Vectone in the Philippines and will only work with that network and only one mobile number.

What do you need to do?

• Once you have received your sim card , you need to topup it up with at least £15 pounds.

• Then you need to register the vectone simcard that you want to use for the service. You can register 3 vectone simcards and share the 1500 minutes allowance.

• At the registration, you will also be asked for one Sun Cellular number and the details of your contact in the Philippines. Remember that this number is the only one you can use with your 1500minutes allowance. 

• The service will be activated within 3 days, and in the website, it says that you will receive a confirmation text, but in my case, I did not receive a confirmation text after 3 days, what I did was, I've called them free by dialing 111 using the vectone mobile simcard. The customer service did confirmed that my account is already activated and I do not need to wait for the confirmation text.

• If you want to call another Sun Cellular number or another cellular and land line numbers, you can do so but you need to purchase additional credit. Standard calls to Philippine mobile is 14 pence per minute, 9 pence for landline and 10 pence for sending a text.

*There is also a separate service called world bundle that can bring the price down to 10 pence per minute if you add up £5 more on top of the £15 you have used for the 1500minutes, then just text REG PHL05 to 345

My vectone experience.

I have been using the world bundle service before I have signed up for the my country saver for more than 3 years. In fact the sim card that I was using for the world bundle  is the one I signed up for the country saver. I can say that the service is good and can be as good as the popular mobile providers here in the UK. I've used the service south of England and at land's end without any signal problem.

Sun Cellular netwrok at our mountainous place in the Philippines has a nice signal as well. My contacts have a clear reception, and I can call them as often as I want without looking at the time. Start saving now, and get country saver. Feel free to share to your friends especially whose relatives do not have internet connections for SKYPE!

How to make cheaper international calls with a UK mobile contract

Calling overseas with existing mobile company standard tariff can be very expensive. Calls ranges from 60 pence to £1.99 depending on country destination and mobile company. There is a way to put down the price to at least 30 to 70 percent lower using the mobile network's extra bundles for pay monthly. Most of the networks in the UK has this kind of additional service to their pay monthly customers. So if you forgot to buy international phone card, or too lazy to go out as you run out of credit or simply fed up using these cards, good news is you can use your existing contract to call overseas!

Save On International Call

Using BT Line

You don't have to spend a fortune phoning friends who live outside the UK. All you have to do is select which country you want to call (from our list below) and we'll give you an access number that lets you make cheap calls to that country all the time.

Procedure:

1. Scroll to the country you want to call
2. Dial the corresponding access number
3. Dial the complete destination number




Using Monthly Tariff Mobile Phone

We don't bill you either, your normal service provider will. You don't even have to open an account or use a credit card, it's just cheap calls for you at the same rate day or night, every day of the week. Save on international calls by using your existing pay monthly free call allowance .  A call to the US is only 1 pence per minute.  Text BCALL to 80550 and you will receive £5 worth of call, and that means 500 minutes USA calls! Just be sure you have more free minutes allowance!

Procedure:

1. Text BCALL to 80550 for £5 credit
2. You will receive a confirmation text and and a local access number to place your call, which is 0207 124 6666 at the time of this writing.
3.At the prompt enter your destination number including the international code. Dont press send again.
